1. There was no reference at all within the State Of The
Union Message regarding poverty during this present
depression era. It is also a fact that during the Presidential 2008
campaign it was only John Edwards who campaigned
over poverty concerns, while Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton focused their
attention elsewhere. In addition, no candidate for President campaigned on increasing the income levels of
our working poor or our "low income" senior Citizens.
2. The President also "did not" mention in
his message to Congress that he had previously provided
a "Permanent" 2% wage (COLA) increase to help "High Income" federal
workers during the present 2010 depression, but it is unknown if these Federal wage hikes were also applied
to members of Congress or to any working members who are on their
staff. These Federal
Employees, in 2009, were also qualified to receive a $400
payroll tax reduction for individuals and $800 per couple for 2010.
It is also hypocritical that our Seniors were told that there was
NO inflation in 2009 or 2010, but
somehow the President found inflation a valid reason to compensate his Federal Workers. The President also failed to mention that this 2%
wage hike will be a "Permanent" income increase for
Federal Workers for many inflation years to come, while
the $250.00 stimulus payments to our Senior Citizen's that was paid
in the year of 2009 was ONLY a "one time" COLA substitute payment
that could not be carried over to 2010 or beyond, no matter what the
inflation rate is in the future.
3. The President also did not tell our
Senior Citizens at what point the $500
billion dollars borrowed from Medicare
or the Social Security trust fund will be repaid, and at what interest
rates. It is also outrageous that our Senior Citizens can
"subsidize" a $500 billion National Health Reform Program for this Nation's
"uninsured" for our U.S. Government and WITHOUT the PERMISSION of our
Senior Citizens in advance, but it cannot return the favor by
providing our Senior Citizens with a "Permanent" 2% COLA percentage
payment for 2010 that can be carried over
for any inflation years that may develop in the
future.
It also stands to reason that if our Senior Citizens needed the
$250.00 stimulus payment in 2009, the need is still there
for 2010 since prices continue to
climb. The banks did not need to wait for inflation
trends to receive their financial relief, so our Seniors should be no
different. In addition, the
banks also received a form of a COLA cost of living increase from taxpayers
recently when the President decided to let the banks pay their trillion dollar
debt back to the U.S. Treasury over a "fifteen year" interim
period. In my estimation, this is a lot of "corporate" COLA, but the
"poor" banks desperately need this help, while in the eyes of our U.S.
Government, this Nation's "poor" Senior Citizen's do not.
Our Senior Citizens are smart enough to
know what the "actual" prices are when they shop and pay their bills to determine a "true" inflation rate, contrary
to those bureaucrats who are in Washington D.C. who can push
the "accounting" pencil one way or the other just like they are now doing
in regard to Labor Statistics. In essence, if it looks good for our
present Government policies, that is the direction that the pencil
goes.
4. The President stated in
his speech that he was going to implement a budget freeze, and
that the Military and Social Security would be exempt from this
freeze. What he did not tell you is that any COLA payments our Senior
Citizens may receive for inflation trends in the future have historically
been paid through a separate discretionary general funding budget program
that is SEPARATE from the Social Security budget.
In
addition, the President did not mention that Government entitlement
programs like Food Stamps, Housing Assistance, or any
other related programs, ARE NOT paid from the Social Security System and
would also be subject to being frozen, no matter how much
these various entitlement program prices may increase. It is also ironic that profit restrictions were not placed on the business sector
during this depression, but it seems that the economic
sacrifices in this Nation are always applied to the general
population, including our low income American Working
People, and also our low income Retired U.S. Veterans and Senior
Citizens who may be physically unable to work.
5. On the subject of Health Care Reform the President
said that he was willing to listen to any proposals that would
improve the Health Care Bill and that his doors would be open to "anyone" to
discuss them. However, at the same time he was saying this, his
body and sight was focused directly at the Republicans seated in the
Congress. He did not openly say that the American People or the General
Public would be invited for discussions also.
In addition, the President must have overlooked
the fact that when a prominent group of our American Citizens tried
to testify before Senator Baucus' s Senate Committee in support of a Single
Payer "Public Option" Health Care System so that their views would be
entered as a matter of public record, these American Citizens
were not permitted to speak or testify, and were later expelled from
the Senate hearing room. It is also ironic that the President would only
invite the destructors and distracters of the Health Bill to the White House, who
have always been against any form of a Single Payer or public option. He did not provide an invitation for the American People who do support
a "Single Payer" or "Medicare For All" form of a public option
plan.
Another factor that the President should have considered in
his speech was the exit polling results in the Massachusetts
Senate Race that suggested that 80% of the voters in this Senate
election had also expressed their support for a single payer public
option plan, and that previous National polls have indicated that 61% of
all Americans support the public option also. Even though this election happened PRIOR to the President's State Of The
Union Address, evidently these results were not taken seriously by the
President, so perhaps the last word regarding this public option may come from the American
People when they go to the poles for the next election.
Perhaps the President is also unaware of this fact: the "American Public" has also made millions of telephone calls, signed petitions, sent e-mails or faxes, all in support of either "Single Payer" or "Medicare For All" public
option plans, but these provisions have been denied or ignored by our present U.
S. Congress and the "People at the White House.
In addition, perhaps the President has already
forgotten that he had previously campaigned on the promise that the American People
would have a clear "Choice" on the type of Health Plan they would prefer. But, to the contrary, evidence now suggests that the
President and Congress will not place the American People's
"Single Payer" public option" choice within the current legislative
term.
The problem is: How can the American People lobby for their
"choice" in regard to their health care if the health bill is being
discussed and assembled behind an "iron curtain" or "closed door?"
IN CONCLUSION:
It was also the voting People of this Nation who
previously gave the President a majority in the House and Senate, and these
are the same people who will be making this same decision in 2010. I sincerely hope that Washington will
be listening to our voters now.
