What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
Well, is it? Just for the moment as so many do today??
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are you sorting it out? I am trying to.
Are we meant to take more than we give
Or are we meant to be kind?
Explaining that everyone but the poor and middle classes seem to be taking more than they are giving at the moment is the cruelest thing that I have to explain to the grandchildren.
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
I explain to them that those who seek only to profit, by any means necessary or available and who see the world as populated with themselves and their friends and then 'suckers and fools', do believe that it is eminently wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
What will you lend on an old golden rule?
Then, I tell the grandchildren the Golden Rule as it is defined by many cultures and creeds. I show them how they all seem to say, from ancient times up to today's date, that we should treat others as we wish to be treated by them.
The strong often forget that they might or will surely be weak one day and that they might need some kindness handed out to them and that, if they have never surrounded themselves with anything but strong and selfish people, that they might just find themselves alone and friendless in their time of need.
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
Something even non-believers can believe in.
Be a good neighbor, see the bigger picture, help others, see through another's eyes periodically, think about all of the consequences of your actions, do not decide to act only because it will be profitable to you and to yours. No man is an island.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
We have all been just existing lately and now we need to show each other some love, some activist love. Work within your community to build something to point to later when you might just feel bereft. Do something good for your family, your town, your state and then your nation. You can never go wrong taking these positive actions.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
We have been living on nothing lately. Though, I have always made my grandchildren feel adored and busy, their parents have just stood by and watched this nation and not done much for it and not done much against it, other than to have done nothing but watch it dive.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
Heartless immigration pogroms, I mean programs, and general nastiness from one group in America looking at the other group must stop. We are one, to anyone or any naiton outside THIS nation, we are one nation, America, the USA.
Let's be America, the USA and begin to reform, re-form that nation in a kinder, gentler less greedy, pogromatic and bellicose way, okay? For my grandchildren's sakes, I ask this.
