Until my dying day, I will never forget when she told me what she expected of me. It would have been her daughter's birthday and she was the same age as I.
When it was over, I thought of her. Sophie, I did it. I did what you asked me to do!
JB: You sure did! Do you have any contact with those you rescued?
JFC: I make it my business not to have contact with anyone with whose rescue I was involved, except for a few people who were in prison [in Syria]. Most people do not know who was behind the effort to get them out, and that is the way I want it.
At one time, when some people came out, they brought me presents and I had to go for meals in their homes in Israel and they could hardly [afford to] put food on the table. I stopped going unless I needed information from them about their escape, etc.
JB: I understand that there are lots of Judys of all sizes running around. How do you feel about that?
JFC: What can one say when there are children named for you when you are alive to see it? I'm very, very honored.
Syrians name their children for the parents and grandparents and family members, with the exception of "Judy". Even though that is not a name used by Syrian Jews, the name will continue through generations.
