"During the 2018 recounts in Broward County, no one knew how many votes had actually been cast and every time a new box of ballots came into the room there was immediate distrust," Mangeney says. "Having an independent and bipartisan vote count will allow voters to trust Florida's next statewide recount which, with our history of close elections, is an inevitability."
This effort also requires financial support. Wolf estimates Democracy Counts needs at least a few million dollars to expand outside of Broward County, concentrate on swing states in 2020 and keep the effort going past the next presidential election. Democracy Counts and Citizens Audit of Broward are taking on a complicated subject that election officials across the country have not mastered. And it's too soon to determine whether the organizations can help restore confidence in our election system.
However, it is clear they are following in the footsteps of Sgt. Friday: they just want the facts.
