But by the time he had been through the whole twenty four hour cycle, his thoughts had taken a one hundred and eighty degree turn: "I cannot tell you how horrible it is".It rattles the very center of your being. If you care about the state of humankind, it fills you with despair. We are as a people bleak and hostile and suspicious, filled with senseless partisanship and willing to believe anything and everything about anyone. We are full of ourselves and we hate. And we do it 24/7.
So what the 2008 election has given us is of a President who
prizes empathy, tolerance, and an unfettered search for truth, pitted against
country awash in "me-first intolerance where empathy has become a dirty word
(remember the Sotomayor hearings?) and many people seem to think they know the
truth and are no longer searching for it.
I guess what this book should remind us is that this empathetic,
tolerant and intellectually curious President and the people who agree with him
did WIN this election. Why is it
we still don't feel like a majority?
