We are to blame, as Chris Hedges recently wrote. We are to blame for witlessly
surrendering without a fight the crucial struggle for the hearts and minds of
the millions and millions of white working class Americans who have spent their
whole working lives being screwed out of the real wealth that was rightfully
theirs from the ever increasing productivity gains that have been wrung out of
them so Wall Street and the wealth class that it serves could have an ever
fatter payday. We are to blame for letting the GOP turn their legitimate
populist outrage into a perpetual motion machine of endless feedback loops of
fear and paranoia, born of economic insecurity, directed at a fictitious
liberal elite while the very real corporate elite and their political agents
have stoked their insecurity and paranoia by strip mining their economic
resourcefulness and meager assets at every turn.
And finally, we are to blame for not holding up our end in the vicious class warfare that has been raging in this country ever since Ronald Reagan first put his hand on a bible and said he would preserve, protect and defend the Constitution "so help me God". That is our failure and it has made victims of all of us, Right and Left.
