The DNC refused the offer for a debate on Fox News to avoid anticipated damage that was ultimately supplied by MSNBC. Perhaps they owe us a make-up debate with the lesser-known candidates to give them back stolen airtime which they and we deserve. These candidates stuck their necks out, as Chuck Todd acknowledged, sacrificing to help save our country. The least we could do is give them more than 3 7 minutes and not treat them like chopped liver.
The format of the debates was not thoughtful. There is a problem with our unconsciously blood thirsty culture. After the first night, media focused on one moment of contention between Castro and Beto. Perhaps this inspired the ugly food fight the second night.
Furthermore, who says debate is the best format? It feeds into our superficial, zero-sum thinking? It is mindless, unquestioned assumption. How does this approach keep our politics divisive? How does it constrain what's possible? What about mindful politics? What about a completely different process - collaborative, problem-solving brainstorming round table on issues?
In her final statement, Marianne said that Trump won, not because of plans, but because he said "Make America Great Again," appealing to the American viscera. If we do not want to give Trump a second term, for starters we should do no harm. Dems function superficially and ignorantly on the rational axis. They need to be more conscious, psychologically sophisticated, and open to what they don't know and use psychology in a healthy way - not to manipulate and mystify - but to demystify and reach those who are being manipulated, with compassion and dignity, to raise consciousness, and to help us heal from our ordeal.
Marianne said that Trump has harnessed the power of fear, and we must harness the power of love. True, but to do that, we have to first harness the power of brains, consciousness, knowledge of and the correct use of psychology for the common good.
The DNC made disastrous errors in the past. Hopefully, the DNC is on a learning curve. It's early enough for damage control to prevent mistakes. To rise above our current crisis, the DNC must rethink strategy, consult with appropriate psychologists and act strategically and consciously to help us transform the way we function beyond politics as usual.
