I think the email scandal is real but I don't discuss it much because it does not get ignored by other media, and because our project has always been a critique on feminist grounds from the left. Even if the Republicans might be right in some of their criticisms, I don't feel I have to help them. I do not think she will be indicted though it is not impossible. And I don't think she will lose to Trump -- nor do I want her to. Right wing populist racism is even worse than neoliberalism and warfare, though it is a horrible choice.
JB: Agreed. The Clinton campaign is playing that feminist card for all it's worth, how she's breaking through the glass ceiling and that all women and right-thinking men should applaud and support that. And early on, Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Gloria Steinem made very public, disparaging remarks about anyone who might choose not to support Hillary. Yet many women who consider themselves feminists felt that Sanders has better represented their values. Have women been caught between a rock and a hard place?
LF: Well, in a way yes we have. I'm very tired of seeing feminism weaponized by the Clinton campaign and its supporters in defense of such a bloodthirsty agenda.
But in a way the 2016 primary was very positive because it showed that both feminism and socialism could be proper subjects for public discourse, and that both were quite popular! Since those are two of the most important global movements for human liberation, I think that's pretty good news. In the larger scheme of things, I feel optimistic that better feminism and better left politics will come out of this.
JB: That's encouraging. Where can people pick up a copy of your timely book, Liza?
LF: You can order it from the publisher, Verso, or from Amazon. Or you can buy it anywhere books are sold, I hope at your independent bookstore. Though my own favorite local bookstore, here in Brooklyn, doesn't have it. In fact when I asked, the dude at the register mansplained how misunderstood Hillary was by her critics! So I hope you have better luck finding it at your local independent.
JB: Me too! Anything you'd like to add before we wrap this up?
LF: I think we're good.
JB: Thanks so much for talking with me, Liza. Good luck with the book!
