In the end we may be like the assumed fabled Atlantis, which collapsed into the ocean due to excessive use of extraordinary powers.
Whether such initiatives will culminate in the extinction of humanity remains to be seen. Clearly, in the present moment and during the next forty years, our choices will determine the outcome - either cataclysm leading to doom - or cataclysm leading to personal and societal transformation.
Nihilism
German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche used the term nihilism to describe the western world's disintegration of traditional morality. For Nietzsche, nihilism applied to both the modern trends of value-destruction expressed in the "death of God," as well as what he saw as the life-denying morality of Christianity.
The etymological origin of nihilism is the Latin root word nihil, meaning "nothing," which is found in the related term annihilate, meaning "to bring to nothing." In our present milieu, nihilism is bound to flourish.
In terms of the collective unconscious, humanity (via its leaders) may well experience despair and seek an escape - any escape - including mega-death --- throwing all the chess pieces off the board, in a colossal: "the hell with it all!"
