Enfranchise Diss (Two Sonnets)
by John Kendall Hawkins
I.
Been an expat for 27 years:
Been home: New York: I've smelled the afterburn
of 9/11, my country in tears,
and have known that it's time that we unlearn
notions of freedom -- they went up in smoke
long before we taught 19 Jihads how
to take off but not to land. What a joke!
No trials yet, two decades later, wow.
But what burns me up is the right to vote,
all of those mail-in Black ballots just thrown
to the wind over the years. My Pet Goat
