Extreme elements of the religious right in America share many of these fascistic tendencies:  1) they are deeply irrational and superstitious, 2) they are anti-intellectual, 3) they are convinced they are fighting for their faith in a completely hostile world, 4) they want to go back in time to a biblically inspired golden age, and 5) they have a psychological needs for scapegoats.  It is no accident, for example, that Himmler’s SS was preoccupied with combating abortion and homosexuality by any means necessary, much as today’s fundamentalists on the religious right are.

The American people have finally rejected the Bush regime.  Bush’s base still consists of roughly a quarter of the population, a segment that is probably beyond reason, but the remaining three-fourths of the population will no longer enable Bush or his extremist agenda.  With Hitler the German people woke up too late, so they found themselves in a nightmare.  Bush cast a similar spell for a time, but it has been broken.  The American people are now saying no to his delusional dreams.  Let’s hope we America has awoken in time to avert further follies and even worse nightmares.
