Regarding impeachment, here's a brief vocabulary reminder: to "impeach" a president does not mean to automatically remove him. Webster's first definition is "to charge with a crime or misdemeanor." Therefore impeachment proceedings are focused on finding out the truth. What is done afterwards, as a result, is another step.
I received an email from FreeSpeechForPeople.org yesterday that stated:
"Following the release of the redacted Mueller report yesterday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, along with Reps. Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley, announced that they are joining as co-sponsors of Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib's resolution to start an impeachment investigation of President Trump."
I have done some searching, but I have not seen this covered anywhere else in the news, yet.
Rob noted in his headlined piece today that Michelle Goldberg wrote, in her NYTimes article, (Mueller Did His Job. Now It's the Democrats' Turn):
"To not even try to impeach Trump is to collaborate in the Trumpian fiction that he has done nothing impeachable."
This reminds me of the famous Edmund Burke quotation: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
Luckily for us, the good women seem to be taking over. And not a moment too soon.
AOC tweeted :
"Many know I take no pleasure in discussions of impeachment. I didn't campaign on it, & rarely discuss it unprompted.
We all prefer working on our priorities: pushing Medicare for All, tackling student loans, & a Green New Deal. But the report squarely puts this on our doorstep." (Editor's emphasis)
It is not up to us to second guess what the results of impeachment might be, however, to be in accordance with the laws of this country, there is only one moral next step.
In addition, there can be many more benefits to democracy from an impeachment process than just the possible removal of a president from office, and some of those benefits may be much more important.
The email from FreeSpeechForPeople.org continues:
"Representative Ocasio-Cortez and others have signed on to the resolution that would immediately begin an impeachment investigation, but we need to push more Members of Congress to sign on as cosponsors. Will you tweet at your representatives asking them to join Rep. Tlaib's call for the immediate start of an impeachment inquiry? "
I tweeted my representative, Elaine Luria, and my Senators, too, it's not too early to let them all know what we want.
