I am an aspiring mystic with a bit of experience in sales/marketing, currently living in the New York metro area with my books, candles & more books. I believe we, as a civilization, have reached the low ebb of an entire cycle (see "Hindu Yugas" & Italian Philosopher Giambittista Vico), and are due to bounce back, any minute, with the assistance of a host of gods & goddesses (some of whom I know personally...).

Beatles vs Stones
SHARE More Sharing
I had an odd dream recently: I was in the back of a car saying to the driver that by any objective standard, the Rolling Stones were a far greater band than the Beatles.

"Bitter Pill: Why Medical Bills Are Killing Us" by Steve Brill (Actual Link to "Time Magazine" Cover Story)

National Magazine Award winner Steve Brill's historic expose of the US healthcare system. At 36 pages and 26,000 words, it is the longest cover story ever published by "Time Magazine". And, surprisingly, it is the first major investigative work of journalism on the soaring costs of medical care ever in this country...

A couple of days after I had posted the Google book "How to Know God: the Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali" on OEN, and it had become so surprisingly popular, I was curious as to how, generally, it was ranked on Amazon...

Google Books: "The Bhagavad Gita- Song of God"
SHARE More Sharing
I was actually trying to find a web site devoted to the life of of Krishna, and found virtually nothing at all. I thought this was quite astounding considering Krishna is generally acknowledged to be a full Incarnation of God by hundreds of millions of people around the world. It is particularly amazing in this the 21st century, when we seem to have easy access online, to unlimited information regarding virtually everything else...

Google Books: "How to Know God"

This may be the first book of eastern philosophy I ever read- and is still one of the best. I was surprised to see it available free in it's entirety at Google Books.

God Didn't Need Anyone to Create Him
SHARE More Sharing
It's interesting how often I hear from people that one of the main problems they have with the idea of a Creator creating the universe, is this: Didn't someone then have to create the Creator? These folks seem to assume the obvious logic expressed herein must necessarily invalidate any possibility of a Primal Cause.

Newsweek: "Is the Internet Driving Us Mad?"
SHARE More Sharing
"This is an issue as important and unprecedented as climate change," says Susan Greenfield, a pharmacology professor at Oxford University who is working on a book about how digital culture is rewiring us--and not for the better. "We could create the most wonderful world for our kids but that's not going to happen if we're in denial and people sleepwalk into these technologies and end up glassy-eyed zombies."

Fox 5 Invites You to Their "Fair & Balanced" Inaugural
SHARE More Sharing
Whether this was a conscious "slip" or not, I tend to think it says more about how Fox (and many, if not most, of their viewers) tended to view the inauguration, and how they think it came about, than hours of on-air punditry possibly could. This would be despite the fact that Obama didn't get substantially more votes from the Afro-American community than Kerry or Gore did, and certainly not enough to change the election results...

100 Greatest Books of All Time
SHARE More Sharing
"In 2002, the Norwegian Book Clubs gathered 100 authors from 54 countries and asked each one to list the 10 best works of fiction of all time. The authors responded and this list was created. The titles are arranged alphabetically by author name, so no one book stands above any other. The listmakers did, however, honor a single work -- "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes -- with the title of "best literary work ever written." The following is the group's definitive list of the world's 100 best books."

250,000 People Attend Funeral of Rabbi in Jerusalem

"Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv was not a charismatic figure, lived in small, modest apartment in Mea Shearim, did not meet with Israeli government or other political leaders, is said to have never spent a night outside of Jerusalem, and devoted all of his waking hours to studying the Talmud, usually alone. Yet he was widely acknowledged to be the posek [religious decisor] for Ashkenazi, non-chasidic Orthodox Jews in Israel and throughout the diaspora, on issues from conversion to helping followers choose a marriage partner.

An Admittedly Overly Simplistic Theory Regarding Why Obama Won
SHARE More Sharing
Political elections (particularly in this country), are usually very complicated affairs. And the one just past is far from being an exception. But one basic point (which may or may not have already been pointed out elsewhere), is one that I think was fundamental to Obama's victory.

A year ago, Dave Herman was just another one of the thousands of struggling actors in New York City, picking up odd jobs to make ends meet. Today, he's a master of productivity, a philosopher of motivation, a self-appointed self-help guru, and full-time brand ambassador. (pictured above in one of his comedy videos).
