On Tuesday three members of the U.N. Security Council joined in submitting a resolution demanding a halt to Israeli settlement activity in the Palestinian territories. Â Fourteen of the Council's fifteen members -" including Britain, France, and Germany- are reported ready to vote for it.
In an article by Jeffrey Laurenti of the Century Foundation (www.tcf.org), Laurenti finds this entirely consistent with U.S. policy over the years, but Laurenti  reports that the smart betting in Washington is that the U.S. will instruct America's UN representative to veto the resolution.  This would be a serious mistake, he says.
