Not believe in the Phillies? In this great playing field of ours, we are but mere synthetic fibers on the Astroturf of life, unable to grasp the universe, let alone the origin of the Phanatic, but the Phillies do exist

Yes, Virginia, there really is a Phillies. It exists as certainly as dropped balls, parking lot jams, and overpriced stadium beer and cheesesteaks. No Phillies? Thank God they exist, and will exist forever. A decade from now--nay, two or three decades from now--they may again win a championship, and continue to make glad the heart of frustrated fans who make ice hockey crowds look civil.

Somewhere, Virginia, the sun is shining bright. But, there is no joy in Citizens Bank Park, for these citizens have struck out.

Walter Brasch--who was once a sports editor but went to baseball games mostly for the buffet in the press box--is a syndicated social issues columnist and book author. His current book is the critically-acclaimed novel Before the First Snow, which is devoid of any mention of baseball. He acknowledges the assistance New York Sun reporter Francis P. Church who told a young girl in 1897 to believe in Santa and in miracles. But, then again, he never met the 2012 Phillies.
