As I watch I think about the antique, gargantuan remote control and how far we ve come. From a box in the living room that s just a TV that can t do anything except receive TV images and sound, to TV on your cell phone. Someday your TV will be your computer and your computer will be your TV. The TV Guide will be whatever you want it to be. You ll watch whatever you want whenever you want and your choices will be limitless. If you get too bored maybe you ll create your own channel and develop a following around the world, while no one has ever heard of you in your own home town.
Paying for cable or satellite TV will be remembered fondly like the milkman or TV trays. And your children will look at you and squint when you explain that you couldn t watch a program anytime you wanted; that you had to wait for it to air! They ll giggle at that. Air? What does that mean? You ll try to explain it, that there were only a hundred or so cable channels, really.
The cable box and the satellite relay will end up in the Television Museum, next to the rabbit ears and the VCR and the console TV. The number of channels will expand to infinity, and there will still be nothing on!
