The various AA associations conclude their meetings with what they call the "Serenity Prayer": "God, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And the wisdom to know the difference." With all due respect to the associations for the manifest good they have wrought, it is difficult to suppose a more cowardly apology. For, how can one ever know what he or she cannot change without first trying, then trying again, and again, and again? Foolishness is the antonym of wisdom. But, throughout all human history, "the arc of which is long, but that bends toward justice," it has been the foolish inability to not see where failure was a probable outcome that has made all the difference. -- Ed Tubbs, Tenino, WA
