Friday, October 26, 2012 More People Eschew Jobless Benefits Than Scam SystemSHARE
Some people scam the system to get jobless benefits they don’t deserve. But far more don’t claim the benefits for which they are eligible, according to research by economists working with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. In 2009, for example, the federal and state governments paid almost $121 billion in unemployment insurance, including $11 billion in overpayments. If everyone eligible for jobless benefits that year had claimed them, the program would’ve had to shell out an additional $108 billion, according to an article by Concordia University economist David Fuller, St. Louis Fed economist B. Ravikumar and Texas A&M University economics professor Yuzhe Zhang.

You knew (or at least HOPED) that, eventually, someone in the mainstream media would look into Mitt Romney’s claim that his “plan†would create 12 million new jobs. Well, someone, i.e. the Washington Post, finally did … and it ain’t pretty.

Friday, October 12, 2012 Letters show Congressman Paul Ryan sought food stamps, stimulus money and money under ObamacareSHARE
According to The Associated Press, Congressman Paul Ryan has sought for his constituents in Wisconsin an expansion of food stamps, stimulus money, federally guaranteed business loans, grants to invest in green technology and money under President Barack Obama's health care reform law. The Associated Press reviewed 8,900 pages of correspondence between Ryan's congressional office and more than 70 executive branch agencies that it obtained under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act. They showed that for 12 years as a member of Congress, Ryan has sought from the federal government money and benefits that in some cases represent the kinds of largess and specific programs he is now campaigning against. Such requests are at odds with Ryan's public persona as a small-government advocate and tea party favorite who has pledged to tighten Washington's belt.

In 2011, Wellington, Fla. City Council candidate Al Paglia was declared the winner, only to learn that the tally machines had reversed his votes with his opponent’s. As it turns out, the company that made the voting machines actually KNEW about the software glitch but neglected to inform city staff. It’s curious why Palm Beach County bought these machines in the first place. They had a well-documented history of problems, yet the city bought them anyway—on a no-bid contract. Meanwhile, according to The Free Press, voting machines used to count votes in multiple states, including some swing states, are manufactured by a company with ties to Bain Capital and Mitt Romney. It’s reminiscent of the 2004 election when Wally O’Dell promised Bush he would deliver the states where his machines were used. If the votes are close in these swing states, it will be hard to trust the results.

(1 comments) Thursday, September 13, 2012 Why Mitt Is More Dangerous Than George W. BushSHARE
What did Mitt do around 12 AM of September 12? He decided that he would take a tragedy that was still unfolding and use it to make a political point in a scathing email statement. Conservatives were complaining about a statement that the American embassy in Cairo put out trying to soothe the protesters. So when a likely unrelated attack on our embassy in Benghazi took the life of an American Ambassador, he took that critique and used to attack the president via email. Mitt Romney didn’t understand, or didn’t care, that he was commenting on and inflaming a crisis that is still in progress, putting American diplomats all over the Middle East at risk.
Tuesday, December 27, 2011 Not Hiring Until Obama Is Gone Is A Symptom Of Broader GOP IgnoranceSHARE
A photo of a sign posted on a Georgia man’s company trucks went viral on the Internet, and it exemplified ignorance, vindictiveness, and contempt typical of Republican economic policies that many Americans support. The sign read, “New Company Policy: We are not hiring until Obama is gone.†The company owner, Bill Looman, said his message was not political, but representative of his belief that he cannot hire anyone because of the economy; he blames President Obama.

Thursday, July 28, 2011 Jon Stewart Blasts Fox News for Playing the Victim Card in Reporting on the Norwegian Mass MurdererSHARE
Ignoring, as Stewart puts it, the shooter’s "1500-page, crucifix-drenched manifesto," O''Reilly, Ingraham and pals made the case for liberal-sanctioned-persecution of Christians that extends from the 'accusation' that Breivik is a follower of Christ to even the attack on Christmas. Through appeals like, "no one believing in Jesus commits mass murder," a la O'Reilly to Gretchen Carlson's outburst that Christians feel alone at Christmas time, Stewart displayed a lovely montage of Fox news anchors and pundits defending the only religion that matters to them.
Thursday, July 28, 2011 Shockingly Sensible: McCain Tells GOP Holding Out For Balanced Budget Amendment Is "Unfair" and "Worse Than Foolish"SHARE
Though an avid supporter of the BBA, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) stood amazed that some members actually believed a BBA could pass in the Senate. Such a belief, he said, is “worse than foolish. That is deceiving.†Taking heed of numerous economists’ warning about the Aug. 2 deadline, McCain said that Republicans who are holding out on raising the debt ceiling for an impossible amendment is “unfair†and “bizarro.â€

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said today that some members of his own caucus who are refusing to agree to a compromise debt ceiling deal are hoping to unleash “chaos†and thus force the White House and Senate Democrats to make bigger concessions than they’re already offering. As many as 40 House Republicans, especially Tea Party members and freshmen, have demanded nothing short of changing the Constitution to include a balanced budget amendment before they would vote to raise debt ceiling, even though that has zero chance before the U.S. faces potential default on Aug. 2.

Bill O'Reilly was very clear tonight on where he stands on the debt-ceiling fight: The crisis is President Obama's fault. Why? Because of "the fact that he spent that much money."
Friday, July 22, 2011 Why the Wealthiest Americans Are the Real 'Job-Killers'SHARE
Consumer demand accounts for around 70 percent of our economic output. And with so much wealth having been redistributed upward through a 40-year class-war from above, American consumers are too tapped out to spend as they once did. This remains the core issue in this sluggish, largely jobless recovery. The wealthy, in their voracious appetite for a bigger piece of the national pie, are the real job-killers in this economic climate.

Tuesday, June 14, 2011 Thousands of Macy's Employees Set to Strike at Midnight; Company Trying to Pay Workers Less as it Makes Record ProfitsSHARE
How's this for a deal? When their contract expires at midnight tonight, Macy's employees will start to see eroded earnings, higher healthcare costs, less paid time off, and fewer opportunities to advance within the company, while the department store's CEOÂ will continue to enjoy a multimillion-dollar compensation package (it totaled $15 million last year).
