Rob: I'm thinking how crazy a lot of the people running for government are.
BB: Yeah.
Rob: Okay, so we've got about ten minutes left. You've spent a lot of your life looking at the world from a feminist prospective including healthcare and psychiatry. Can you bridge that and talk about that a bit, too?
BB: You know, well it's not as big an emphasis in this last book as in other books. It is clear to me that psychiatry is a patriarchal invention. Okay, and goes along with patriarchal ways of understanding. And on a simple level, that keeps women down and pathologizes women who will not be kept put down, etc. So it's particularly bad for women. So it's no accident that two to three times many women as men are electroshocked. But on a more global basis, it in fact keeps everyone down, because patriarchy is part of hierarchy and rule. And so it is not only the fact that women are treated worse, which women are. It's everyone is treated badly. If we start getting out of patriarchy, which means rule by fathers, and bring back our ruling, you know our governing ourselves together in enlightened and caring ways, we will have gone a long ways to solving the problems of the world, is this inherently patriarchal? It absolutely is inherently patriarchal. And for a long time my focus was overwhelmingly on women because when something is patriarchal, women get the worst part of it.
Rob: But how about the other side of it? How is patriarchy bad for or hurt men?
BB: Because it stops them from being full human beings. If you are turned into, A, an oppressor and B, a controlled oppressor, you know controlled by industry, you are not a full human being. It profoundly hurts men.
Rob: Keep going.
BB: So I would like to see a society where we are not understanding things by nature of binary opposites gender. Where everyone gets a chance to grow. You know it's, where everyone gets a chance to be giving and caring. And you know the irony of the superiorization of one sex over another is that it may be on some level, that the people most forwarded in becoming fully human are men. Right.
