Nuclear Threats - Part 4 - Take Action against U.S. Cover-ups in Nuclear Power and Nuclear Missile Defense

Robert A. Leishear, PhD, PE, ASME Fellow
Message Robert A. Leishear, PhD, PE, ASME Fellow

This article criticizes inadequate nuclear missile defenses, condemns the use of the term 'tactical nuclear weapons', condemns mass murder during nuclear war, and condemns preventable nuclear power plant explosions. All of these threats strike danger into our lives.

Editors of many news outlets publish one side of each of these stories, over and over, article after article. However, these editors refuse to publish facts that contradict each of these stories, regardless of the importance to our lives. Freedom of Speech has been thwarted by many editors as governments and industries cover up explosion dangers in both nuclear power and nuclear war.

In this series of articles, I accuse the U.S. government of an ongoing pattern of lies, and we should act against these lies that can snuff out lives.

Failed Missile Systems and Mass Murder

These publications relate missile system failures to the number of dead if nuclear war starts. Massacres and destroyed cities are harsh realities for discussion. Regardless, the nuclear safety information and opinions presented in this series of articles are too important to conceal from Americans by a news blockade from publishers.

The facts are that the U.S. missile defense system will not stop mass murder in a nuclear war. Newspapers have stated that the systems do not operate properly, but the magnitude of resultant deaths are depicted here for the first time. The Press has acknowledged that U.S. nuclear missile defenses are inadequate, but the Press will not cross the line, and say that our lives are endangered.

Missile Defense System Fails to Protect Our Lives

In this series of articles, the contractors' ability to design completely effective missile defense system was not challenged. I have only noted the published deficiencies that affect our lives.

Also, North Korea has been reported to have successfully tested hypersonic missiles that exceed the speed of sound, and there is no evidence that any nuclear missile defense tests have been performed to intercept such high speed missiles. In other words, missile defenses are flawed, and we do not know the extent of those flaws.

If, in fact, contractors are forced to improve their systems, or perform additional tests to prove that their systems perform better than in the past, contractor profits will boost. Costs are always a factor in saving lives.

Scope of Death

The scope of death in a nuclear conflict is understood by many (Figures 1 and 2). However, my opinion is that such mass murder should be legally classified as a war crime, regardless of which side fires the missiles of death. The deaths in war that may be decreed by the powerful are 'scary', to say the least.

Very soon, we need to rethink nuclear weapons in terms of the people that can be killed.

Figure 1: Hiroshima 15 kiloton explosion, August 6, 1945 - An airburst explosion fired a double cloud into the sky. The first cloud fires upward from the initial blast (580 meters, 1,870 feet). The second cloud formed as the blast blew out, back, and up.

Stop the Lies about Nuclear Weapons

The fact is that intentionally misnamed tactical nuclear weapons are nuclear bombs of mass destruction and mass death. Words matter. I have sent many tweets to many reporters who continue to promote the term 'tactical nuclear weapon'. They do not respond. The U.S. government has dishonestly promoted this term for many decades.

Many articles appear in the Press, where tactical nuclear weapons are callously dismissed as routine considerations in war.

Stop the Lies about Nuclear Power Safety

The fact is that nuclear power plant disasters can be stopped. Fukushima explosions could have been prevented, where lies about Three Mile Island were promoted for decades.

As another example, the Press recently issued multiple articles about creating a safe zone around Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants in Ukraine. However, the IAEA refuses to acknowledge that catastrophic nuclear plant explosions can be prevented, and many Press editors follow this lead and block such information from the public.

Stop the Fact Blockade to Save Lives

To detail another example, the American Nuclear Society (ANS) refused to reprint recent articles to prevent nuclear power plant explosions. The ANS claimed that there was insufficient hydrogen created by radiolysis to cause a nuclear plant explosion. Such claims rely on forty year old technology that has not kept up with new research findings. Radiolysis had nothing to do with nuclear disaster explosions at Three Mile Island and Fukushima, and the ANS was clearly informed of this fact, where peer reviewed references were provided. In other words, the ANS 'experts' who refused to publish new ideas probably did not read my work, or perhaps they did not have the ability to understand what they read.

Either way, the ANS blocked new nuclear safety information from nuclear engineers throughout the world. Their refusal to publish public safety information was not based on scientific fact. I strongly disagree with ANS.

The ANS stops nuclear industry safety improvements at the expense of public safety and at the expense of life. Refusal to stop the next radioactive nuclear disaster caused by nuclear plant explosions endangers our lives and our environment.

In short, the ANS, the U.S. NRC, the IAEA, the NEA, the United Nations, and the U.S. DOE all endanger our lives by allowing the next nuclear disaster to explode radioactive fallout across our planet and possibly kill people. All of these agencies refuse to act to improve nuclear safety by blocking safety information. Such actions constitute deceit that can cost lives.

Stop the Murders and Destruction

The fact is that you have the right to stand against government actions that risk our lives (Figure 3). Ignoring the facts, and ignorance of the facts, do not change the facts, which our government refuses to face.

Send the following letter to our President - who controls when to fire a nuclear weapon - at https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact, and also send this letter to your Congressional Representative and your two Senators.

"Stop Nuclear Deaths in Peace and in War

We are not safe from nuclear war explosions, and we are not safe from nuclear power plant explosions. Stop the lies from our government agencies about nuclear safety.

* Operate nuclear power plants safely to prevent widespread radioactive contamination, mass evacuations, and deaths from explosions.

- Change nuclear plant procedures and designs to stop the next explosion before 2039.

* Stop nuclear war to prevent mass death.

- Acknowledge that tactical nuclear weapons are weapons of explosive mass murder from nuclear bombs.

* Ensure that U.S. skies are safe from nuclear bomb attacks.

- Ensure that U.S. nuclear missile defense systems are effective.
* Legislate mass murder from nuclear weapons to be a war crime.

Stop the bomb. Stop the lies.

See "Nuclear Threats - Part 1 - We Are Not Safe If North Korea Fires Nuclear Bombs at Us", "Nuclear Threats - Part 2 - A Fight for Freedom of the Press of the Press to Say That We Are Not Safe If Nuclear Bombs are Fired at Us", "Nuclear Threats - Part 3 - Our Government Lies To Us About Nuclear Safety - Radioactive Explosions In War and In Peace", and "Nuclear Threats - Part 4 - Take action against U.S. Cover-ups in Nuclear Power and Nuclear Missile Defense" (OpEd News, 11/28/2022 - 11/30/2022)."

I sent this letter to Senator Lindsey Graham, Senator Tim Scott, Representative Joe Wilson, and President Joseph Biden.

My Senator, Lindsey Graham, responded to this email as follows. 'Thank you for contacting me regarding the presidential authority to authorize the use of nuclear weapons. As the Senate considers this issue I will keep your comments in mind' (12/1/2022). Citing costly regulations, he previously chose to not support a request for safer nuclear power. Senator Graham did not respond to concerns about mass murder and failed nuclear missile defenses.

Addendum

The following letter was emailed after this article was published (11/30/2022). No responses were received (12/2/2022). This government and regulator cover-up risks lives. The Press, itself, blacks out Freedom of the Press and risks lives.

To: The U.S. DOD, the IAEA, the U.S. DOE, the U.S. NRC, the ANS, the NEA, the United Nations, the Associated Press, the Baltimore Sun, the New York Times, the LA Times, the Seattle Times, the New York Post, the Washington Post, Politico, the Houston Chronicle, the San Francisco Chronicle, The Guardian, USA Today, Newsweek, Newsday, the New York Daily News, the Dallas Morning News, Huffpost, the Star Ledger, the Philadelphia Enquirer, The Oregonian, the Chicago Tribune, and the Boston Globe. The President of ANS, the Director General of the IAEA, and two U.S. missile defense contractors were also provided a copy of this email.

Dangers to Freedom of the Press and Dangers to Lives in the U.S.

Four Op Eds were published this week, and I stated in those articles that your organizations blocked Freedom of the Press, endangered U.S. lives, or both. Respectfully, new ideas are difficult to accept, but when such new ideas save lives, we should work together to do so. If you disagree with these comments or publications, please respond. My articles can be edited for the next few days to address such comments, and I will address comments received on or before December 2, 2022.
